Berin teaches private saxophone, clarinet, and jazz lessons in his studio in Orem, Utah. He holds a master’s degree in music performance and pedagogy and has been an active performer and teacher for over 30 years. He has taught at Brigham Young University, the University of Alaska, and Utah Valley University. The bands he currently plays in are Mississippi Mood (as music director and tenor sax player), Night Star Jazz Orchestra (on bari sax, bass clarinet, clarinet, and flute), City Jazz (lead alto), and Valley Jazz Ensemble (bari sax). He has also performed with the Utah Valley Symphony, the Timpanogos Orchestra, and the Anchorage Symphony along with many other bands and styles of music (rock, blues, salsa, and jazz).
The private lessons are typically a half-hour long, unless other arrangements are made. There are three payment packages available: a single lesson is $25, the ‘month’ package is 4 lessons for $90, and the ‘semester’ package is 15 lessons for $300. Lessons are normally held once a week unless there’s a holiday or a planned absence.
Students are expected to practice regularly. The lessons will cover fundamentals, scales, theory, and literature. But music is more than these things. It is also important to make sure that each student has fun while playing their instrument. Playing by ear, playing with recordings, reading from songbooks, and creating their own music is highly encouraged.
